Being an active citizen will earn you Democracy Points. Democracy Points will be redeemable for ingame perks in the future.

Points are distributed daily after vote counting has been completed. Players earn points based on their voting power, plus additional multipliers for their country's current ranking. You will only earn points for countries that you have voted in that day.
